Apart from blood and sweat, to get our two Suzuki V-Strom from Washington, DC to Ushuaia, we needed:
• 10 tires in addition to the ones we had when we left
• 16 oil changes, one of which done by Caroline
• 8 oil filter changes, one of which changed by Caroline
• 24 spar plugs just because Chad follows the manual by the book
• 1163 gallons or 4398 liters of gasoline, without once running out of gas
From a traveling perspective, we could summarize it in:
• 309 days of traveling
• 32,647 miles or 52.235 kilometers traveled each, a few more for Chad's bike with the two-up rides
• 15 countries visited, some multiple times like Chile and Argentina
• 34 passport pages stamped, Chad is actually running out of space
• 6 boats we put our bikes on, the longest for 5 days between Panama and Columbia and the shorter on a little wooden barge across a river
• $518.82 spend in border crossing fees
• 2 bribes paid to the corrupt cops, 150 pesos in Mexico and 44 Lempiras in Honduras
• 4 bribes we managed not pay, 2 fake IDs left behind to not pay a bribe we should have, 1 police run on an illegal U-turn (please don't report us)
• 2 days riding in the snow, our bikes covered with frost twice, different days and countries though
Other less fun facts about the trip:
• Caroline dropped her bike 6 times, most spectacular and less painful ones were in the sand
• Chad never dropped his bike (!!!!) but he dropped Caroline's twice, go figure...
• We had one accident with each other but only Caroline crashed
• We had to take 132 malaria pills both, no side effects recorded yet
• 2 flat tires that we could fortunately fix on the road, always right before dusk (and a bonus one in a car, with Caroline's parents)
• 1 black rooster, 1 baby rabbit, 2 birds and 127,832 insects killed, and we love animals!
Feel free to add more fun facts in the comment section if we have forgotten some:) And the trip now continues towards the north of Argentina... More stories to come!
This is our story...
Being both motorcycle riders with a love for travelling, we talked about touring the world on bikes about two years ago.
After looking into logistics/constraints and places we wanted to explore, we decided to tour the Americas from Alaska, USA to Ushuaia, Argentina.
We also wanted to have the same motorcycle to simplify maintenance, and find something we would both feel comfortable riding. We ended up chosing the Suzuki V-Strom 650, a 07' grey one for Chad and a 05' red one for Caroline.
We left for our journey on 6/14/09 from Washington, DC and arrived in Ushuaia, Argentina on 4/19/10. Click here and read below to see what it took us to make it to Ushuaia.
On 6/9/10, we flew back to the United States almost exactly a year after we had left for this journey.

The stats were fun to read. Well, all except for the baby rabbit...
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to more tales and I'm amazed how bummed I'm going to be to see this journey end in less than two months!
32,647 miles - I hope you guys have a frequent flier card - wow!! Can't wait to hear more
ReplyDeleteI loved the fun facts. So hard to believe you've done all that. Stay warm...
ReplyDeleteGreat stats. Obviously you're keeping a good journel. Maybe a book concerning your adventures will be next!
ReplyDeleteLove the stats! I am glad I was part of a very small part of this adventure... and the crash / dropped bike didn't happen when I was a passenger :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing achievement!
